MUSIC SCHOOL MAKES A MOVE

J Shelby stands in front of the 851 Music Studio

851 Music Studio – 1043 Grant St. Benicia CA 94510

One of Benicia’s hidden gems, the 851 Music Studio has relocated to its perfect home. Director J. Shelby says the new location in Benicia’s Arts District at 1043 Grant St. is what he’s wished for ever since opening in 2006. The newly renovated building features spacious lesson studios and a large main room for performances.

With the expanded facilities, Shelby is increasing his teaching staff and classes. Music students hoping to reach high levels of excellence will now have more opportunities than ever. The studio offers personalized instruction in guitar, piano, violin, voice, bass and drums.

There are also classes available for children 0 through 5 years old  through staff member Justine Chadly.

Offerings go beyond traditional 30 and 60 minute lessons. Although four lessons per month are recommended, students have the flexibility of customizing their own lesson schedule. Private lessons also include group playing and regular performance opportunities for all ages, a huge reference library as well as the use of computers featuring the best known musical software programs for ear-training, recording, music creation and education.

Please call for more information about lessons.

Children’s Classical Guitar Quartets

Children’s classical guitar ensembles are ongoing. They will have performances in December to kick off the Christmas season. Mark your calendar, there will be limited seating. A variety of music, classical through pop, will be presented, as well as etudes and compositions written and or arranged by J. Shelby.

Children’s Classical Guitar Quartets are extremely rare in the United States and we hope to expand on this concept in the future as it is profoundly powerful for developing musicianship. The challenge lies in providing scores that are level-appropriate and in making all of the hard work fun.

“Tone Deaf Singing” Class?

There’s no such thing as being “tone deaf.” If there were, you would not be able to recognize your mother’s voice over the phone. The fact is, you can even tell what mood she’s in.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to be able to sing,” but felt it was impossible, the Tone Deaf Singing Class is for you. Beginning on Monday, September 12th at 7:30pm, this one-hour class runs eight weeks and is oriented toward those individuals who’d like to sing but think they can’t. Participants enjoy improved musical perception and gain an overview of the twelve-tone system used in our culture and how it developed.

851 Music Studio studio provides private and group instruction, student band development, computer learning, recording, play nights, workshops, field trips and student performances. Beginning through advanced students are welcome.

We Want Workshops

We’ve hosted many band labs and musician’s workshops over the years. This past July we’ve experienced one of the best ever. With more singers and risk taking instrumentalist who’d rather rock with new friends than work it out alone in the bedroom – though there’s need for that too… =-). It seemed by the end of the workshop everyone was focused and clamoring for more.  The point is we had a wonderful group of kids aged 11 to 16 who pushed for performance. The next workshop will be more intensive than ever and give some dedicated students some great experience and opportunities to grow with live playing.
